New Year's Resolutions in Work

It's not long to go until Christmas and then before we know it it'll be 2019! Which is followed by the old saying "New Year, New Me" but let's be honest, we'll still eat as much, drink as much and the only machine used at the gym will be the vending machine! So how about you make some resolutions that you can actually keep? If you incorporate it into your working life, then you will feel good when you hit your goals.

More people these days are less bothered about settling down with a family, and are more career driven – they really want to reach the top. Below we've come up with some potential goals that you could use in 2019. Plus, it's not something you're necessarily cutting out of your life – it's just making room for improvements!

1. Be Optimistic!
It's often found that optimism can lead to high performance and productivity. Positivity gives you an outward look on life and 9 times out of 10, if you say to yourself 'I can do this!' then you will succeed. Remember that the glass is always half full!

2. Make the most of your day
We can appreciate that not everyone is a morning person, but as the old saying goes 'the early bird catches the worm' and it's true. If you get up that little bit earlier and get jobs or other things out of the way with then it clears not only your schedule, but your mind too.

3. Know where you want to be in life
Where do you want to be in 5 years' time? Where do you want to live? What role do you want to be in? Thinking ahead never hurt anyone and once it's clear in your mind what you want to do and where you want to do it then you can start and plan the best way of getting there!

4. Grab Opportunities
You should never turn down an opportunity to further yourself in life, whether it be a promotion or the chance to take something else on that might not be required of you. By pushing yourself that little bit further than others you are opening doors for yourself and opportunities will arise when you least expect them.

5. Surrounding yourself with positivity
Just because you are healthy on the inside and outside, if you're not healthy in your mind and heart then it'll always pin you down. You need to hold your head high and let the positives outweigh the negatives, just because something is going the right way right now, doesn't mean that it never will. Only will you succeed in life if you believe in yourself and believe in what you're doing.

6. Follow your passion – unapologetically
Forget what everyone else thinks – do what makes you happy! Just because your passion isn't for everyone, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't do it. If you enjoy what you're doing then you won't find it hard to get up and go in the morning, nor will you lie awake thinking at night. The saying "live to work, don't work to live" is completely right, don't be your own prisoner! Although you might need to make some sacrifices, if you're happy and enjoy what you're doing then that sounds like success to me!

7. Say no, but also say yes!
Don't worry, we're not trying to confuse you. What we mean is that you should say no to things that aren't aligned with your goals. Your life surrounds around work, friends and family, right? And you make your choices based on those? Well no more! You should make all your core choices in life based around one thing, you! Don't be a people pleaser, if you can be upfront and say no then you will have clarity and will therefore focus on your ongoing success.

But, say yes to staying late, to going to that event, to starting early, to helping someone with their shopping – you never know what situations can end up helping you in the long run. If people see how hard you work and how willing you are then they are more inclined to help you in return. Although leaving your comfort zone can be hard it's often important to get yourself out there and meet new people! So attend that network evening, or mingle amongst people at an event – Afterall sometimes it's who you know not what you know that can give you that stepping stone to your career goals!

8. Make time
It's important in life to make time and space for things that matter. A happy work/life balance is the key. Your overall happiness in life is always connected to the quality of the relationships that you surround yourself with. Don't forget about the people who have helped you along the way.

Try making your own list for 2019 – and make it yours a year to remember!
